Volunteer Story: Savannah Ball

The work Humanity & Hope does in Honduras wouldn’t be possible without our incredible volunteers. Today, we’re sharing Savannah’s story with you! If you’re interested in volunteering, going on a trip, or becoming a donor, don’t hesitate to reach out. There is space for you here and we would love to have you!

How did you hear about Humanity and Hope?

Ben Higgins attended an event I hosted for the nonprofit I worked for and mentioned Humanity and Hope!

Why did you choose to come with us?

I grew up going on mission trips, but hadn’t been on one in eight years after going to college and not being super active/connected to a church. I was afraid to just pick an organization offline because of the potential dangers of overseas travel. Knowing Ben was endorsing H&H is what made me look into it, but what made me decide to go on the trip was how H&H works WITH the communities and creates relationships. They don’t tell them what they need or visit them once and then abandon them.

What was the most eye-opening thing you saw or experienced in Honduras?

The grace, love, kindness, vulnerability, hope, and faith people there have. They are the most loving and inviting people I have ever met. They know they have so little, yet hold so tight to their faith in God and hope in the future. Everyone that comes into their community with H&H is a friend from the moment they arrive.

Favorite part?

We did a spa day in La Cuchilla (previously referred to as the “abandoned hole”) and I got to wash the feet of the men, women, and children. There were so many laughs and it was the most beautiful and humbling day for me.

Any advice (or encouragement) you'd give to someone who is thinking of joining us on a trip?

If you’re on the fence about going, just go! Don’t overthink it. I didn’t know anyone my first trip. Be vulnerable and trust both those on the trip and those in the communities.

How has your trip impacted your daily life since returning?

I’m more aware and thankful of the things that I have that I took for granted before I went on the trip. I try not to let myself feel guilty because I feel like that does nothing for anything, but I actively try to be more grateful and do good with what I do have!

Tell us about your current involvement with H&H!

I’m a monthly donor and serve on the fundraising team.
