For Not Forgetting Us, the Poor: Ruth Vargas's Story

A huge part of Humanity and Hope’s mission is understanding the people and needs in the communities we serve in Honduras. When it comes to our disaster relief efforts, this is especially necessary.

Ruth Modesta Vargas Portillo, a 22 year-old from Col. Cerrato came in with her daughter Mía Padilla Vargas, for their first medical visit with H&H.

“She came in with her daughter for consultation...we began to talk...She told me that the situation has not been easy…” Dr. Gissell Ramirez recounts.

Ruth, a single mother, was struck with devastation in 2020. The same week that massive floods came through her area from the hurricanes, her home was burned down. "We totally lost everything."

“Right now they live with my sister and brother, they are helping us to build a little room.”

As Ruth’s family begins trying to rebuild their life, they are thankful for the help in these other areas of need. She said cannot even afford to go to a clinic when needed, nonetheless getting to have a private doctor attend to her.

While this healthcare has been very helpful, the food provided by H&H has been a pivotal element of support for people like Ruth.

“I hope that you never stop coming here to help us, because that food helps us. Look, sometimes we don't even have anything to eat…

Sometimes I start crying because my daughter asks me for food and I don't have it…”

Ruth is so thankful to H&H for the help offered to her and her daughter. This day was the fourth time she was able to receive food provisions!

“It is hard...you cannot imagine the great help that this means for us and that [H&H] come to give us medicines...I thank the Lord for giving us these aids, Humanity and Hope for not forgetting us, the poor. Thank you for everything and I hope you never leave us.”
