We Need Hope: Doña Silveria Fernández’s Story

Sixty-year-old Doña Silveria Fernández lives alone in Colonel Serrato, La Lima Cortés. Without assistance from her family, she doesn’t always know how her daily needs and medications will be provided.

“...sometimes I don’t even have [anything] to eat and I am forced to go and ask a friend for food and she feeds me.”

H&H Medical brigade physician, Dr. Gissel Ramirez, met Silveria when she came in for a refill of her daily medications. They talked at length about Silveria’s surroundings and her medical needs which included 20mg of enalapril to control her blood pressure. On that day, she was feeling fine. But that is not her everyday.

“I talked a lot with her, she told me about her surroundings. She told me that she lives alone, she does not receive help from her relatives…”

Gissel’s medical consultation with Silveria lasted over thirty minutes. She was amazed by Silveria’s ability to continually make a great effort for her health despite all of the hardship she has experienced.

“They are truly incredible and they have not lost faith and they always receive us with a big smile despite their sufferings...and people with huge hearts...touch you.”

Humanity and Hope’s presence in Silveria’s neighborhood was very exciting for her. She feels assured that with H&H in her community, she will have her food and daily medications provided.

“First of all, I thank GOD for sending [Humanity and Hope] to help us because despite so many things that we have had to live, we need hope and, for that, we have God and you. Thank you very much!”
