Mikaela went on one of our trips earlier this summer. She had been in a hard place in life and after learning about Humanity and Hope via Instagram, she decided to step out of her comfort zone and do something for others. Mikaela owns PAY IT FORWARD GEAR and is using a portion of her business to continue to give back to Humanity and Hope (read through to find the discount code!).
Why did you decide to go on a trip?
I was in a pretty dark place when I reached out to H&H. I didn't know what my purpose in life was, I felt like I didn't belonged anywhere, and I felt really lost. The more I looked at pictures of H&H trips, the more I thought this is something I needed to do and the more I realized I needed to be a part of something greater than anything I was doing at home. I had a few people tell me there is no way I could handle a trip. There were a LOT of firsts for me on this trip, which was amazing. It helped bring me out of my comfort zone in a huge way.
What was the most eye-opening thing you saw or experienced in Honduras?
The people in the villages were so welcoming and grateful. They would come up to us and give us huge hugs, drop what they were doing to help us paint, and they opened their homes to us. Gratitude, love and hard working people were what I saw in the different villages.
Mikaela’s favorite part from her trip!
Do I have to pick just one?! The people. Hands down. From other volunteers who have become like family (we visit each other, we FaceTime often, send each other cards etc), and the people in the villages. I look back on photos and I just wish I could be hugging up to them. The H&H team in Honduras become family.
Any advice (or encouragement) you'd give to someone who is thinking of joining us on a trip?
Two words: Do it! You won't regret it. Seriously, after reading this - go back, and apply for a trip! The people you will love on are amazing and in a way, it helped me through my dark period. It was nothing but love on that trip which is exactly what I needed at that time. I connected with people on the trip that had similar struggles, and it was so nice knowing I wasn't alone. We all had the same goal - to help others, to give back, and to be kind.
How has your trip impacted your daily life post trip?
I look at things differently now and I am definitely more grateful. I have a burning desire in my heart to help others even more than I did before. I've made lifelong friends who have become a huge part of my daily life.
What are ways you plan to continue to be generous and offer hope in your daily life?
I am currently a monthly donor, and I'd love to get onto the marketing team! I have a brand called Pay it Forward Gear (which is all about giving back) that is partnering with H&H to raise money through my products.
WOW! Thank you Mikaela for using your business and personal experience to benefit H&H. We are so grateful! You can get your own PAY IT FORWARD gear at 10% off and $2 from each item will be donated back to Humanity and Hope. Make sure to use the code H&H at checkout.
