Volunteer Story: Emily Cain

We love social media around here because it allows us to meet people from all over and bring them into the Humanity and Hope family. Emily found out about H&H through the “explore” tab over on Instagram and decided to see what we were all about. She went on our trip in May 2018 and we’re sharing more about her today!

Why did you decide to go on a trip?

I really felt drawn to H&H because of their vision — how they want to help people grow into the fullest versions of themselves and use their unique gifts to serve people (this spoke to my heart!!). I think one of the best achievements in life is helping someone to grow and reach his/her fullest potential. So I when I read H&H’s vision, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

What was the most eye-opening thing you saw or experienced in Honduras?

How the people in the villages were so so welcoming and dropped what they were doing to help us help them. Also how extremely thankful they were for everything we were doing to serve them - I have never felt so appreciated in my life.

Emily’s favorite part from her trip!

I love love love how a group of strangers became like family to me in just one short week. Everyone I’ve met through H&H has not only been inspiring to me but also has made me feel as though I’ve known them for years — H&H is one big family that keeps growing and it only makes me want to get involved more and more!

Any advice (or encouragement) you'd give to someone who is thinking of joining us on a trip?

If you’re looking for some sort of sign telling you that you should go on a trip with H&H — THIS IS IT, LOVE! Go, serve, love, be a part of something bigger, and meet some AMAZING people while doing so. You won’t regret it :)

How has your trip impacted your daily life post trip?

Before my trip I could never really figure out what I was passionate about in life — as cliche as it sounds, I felt like I was just “going through the motions” day to day following expectations that my heart wasn’t truly invested in. My trip with H&H helped me to realize that I have a passion for creating and building relationships with people. Since my trip, I see things so differently than I did before. I focus less on my personal success and more on the relationships that I am creating/building with the people around me and then thinking of ways I can improve them even more. So shoutout to my H&H fam for helping me to realize that living your best life is all about how you can improve others’.

What are ways you plan to continue to be generous and offer hope in your daily life?

I am a monthly donor for the H&H Health Squad! Also I’m on the monthly Health Squad calls and I am trying to help Megan with the Health Squad fundraiser:)
