He works, but it’s not enough: Lidia Aguilar’s story

Lidia Aguilar is a 48-year-old woman from the Plantains Villages. She and her husband have five children, two of whom currently live with them.

H&H Medical brigade physician Dr. Gissel Ramirez met Lydia when she brought her 11-year old daughter in after she suffered an injury to the toes of her left foot.

“When I was checking the wound, I could see an infection and inflammation on the big toe of her foot. At the end of the consultation I told her that she needs to give the wound time to heal,” Gissel told us.

“When I gave her the advice to take care of her girl's wound, I mentioned that her daughter should wear closed-toe shoes. If she wears [flip-flops] like the ones she was wearing, the wound would be highly exposed and it will be re-infected.”

Lidia replied with tears in her eyes… “Unfortunately, she only has this pair of flip flops, nothing else.”

She continued telling Gissel: “Even though my husband works on the farm, it’s not enough and sometimes we have to search for something to eat.”

Lidia is so grateful for the help H&H provides because her family doesn’t easily have access to healthcare and struggles to find meals.

“It is a great blessing for us...and I am very excited because they told us that month by month you will be visiting us and that fills me a lot with joy. It is a great relief for us who suffer with all this situation. Thank you very much. I’m excited that you will come to help us again, very grateful.”

Shortly after this encounter, Lidia and her daughter received a new pair of shoes!
