Dos Caminos
Dos Caminos (“Two Roads”) is a forgotten community that lies in the palm fields in Sula Valley between Ampa and La Setenta. Severely affected by hurricanes Eta and Iota, many lost their personal belongings and jobs.
Homes in Dos Caminos are in dire need of care. Most of the cement or bamboo homes lack a bathroom as the community does not have a sewer system (instead they have septic wells). The water quality in Dos Caminos is also very poor. The roads, while travelable, are in bad condition.
The men of Dos Caminos are in need of opportunities to work. Typically cultivating palm, men only work 1-3 days a week. Women rarely, if ever, work. There is a real need to utilize the dormant job skills of the community.
The children of Dos Caminos need to travel a half hour each way to the nearest elementary school as there is no school building or learning center in Dos Caminos. Most students don’t finish 6th grade and the secondary school is far away and expensive.
With chronic illnesses being very common, the lack of a local clinic is an urgent need. The nearest health care facility is in El Progreso. The community will benefit from health education seminars and training.
H&H has great plans for Dos Caminos including building a playground, elementary school, and learning center for the children as well as finding secondary school sponsors for each student. The women of the community will be given the chance to run chicken coops or greenhouses, and the men will work on creating a thriving plantain field. Clean water and street lights will improve the infrastructure. And in addition to the health education training, H&H will offer leadership assistance and weekly doctor visits and emergency care.
